Ship with Andersonville Prisoners Exploded and Sank

In an ironic tragedy, many of the prisoners freed from Camp Sumter - Andersonville prison - were on board the steamship Sultana and headed for home when it exploded just north of Memphis, Tennessee, killing roughly 1700 of the men on board.
