Robert E. Lee Resigned his Commission with the U.S. Army

Despite being offered command of the United States Army, General Robert E. Lee resigned his commission; saying he could not take up arms against his native state of Virginia. One of his early positions with the Confederacy would be to defend the Georgia coast.
