April 17, 1861

Virginia Seceded

On April 4, the secession convention meeting in Virginia had voted against secession. But with the news of what had happened at Fort Sumter, and the calling up of U.S. troops, matters had changed - and this day the convention adopted an Ordinance of Secession (dependent on the voters’ approval), thus becoming the eighth state to secede from the Union. The convention also voted to join the Confederate States of America and ratified the Confederate Constitution.
