Battle of Appomattox Court House; Appomattox Campaign

The final military engagement of the war in Virginia took place at Appomattox Court House - where native Georgian John B. Gordon led a last-ditch attempt to escape the advancing Union troops. His advance - beginning at dawn - was successful at first, pushing back the Union cavalry, but when Union infantry arrived on the scene the Confederate attack was stopped. The Confederate army under General Robert E. Lee was now surrounded on three sides with no means of escape or re-supplying.
