Grant Issued Orders for Spring Campaign

General Ulysses S. Grant issued orders for the upcoming spring campaign. He intended to launch simultaneous - and massive - assaults on in both the eastern and western theaters of the war in May. General George Meade (along with Grant himself) would lead the campaign against General Robert E. Lee and the Army of Northern Virginia. In Georgia, General William T. Sherman would command the Union forces opposed by the Confederates under General Joseph E. Johnston. Union forces nearly doubled those of the Confederates by this time; Grant would command 120,000 men against Lee’s 64,000, while Sherman would lead 100,000 against Johnston with only 60,000.
