Battle of Dinwiddie Court House; Appomattox Campaign

The Battle of Dinwiddie Court House, Virginia - part of the Appomattox Campaign - took place. Union forces had tried to turn the right of the Confederate defenses at the Battle of Lewis’s Farm two days earlier, but on this day - in a rare Confederate victory - Confederate forces were able to meet the Union advance and turn it back. Union reinforcements arrived late and the Confederates pulled back to establish a stronghold at an important intersection called Five Forks.

On this same day the Union did gain ground toward Five Forks in a separate area, establishing control of an important communication line in the Battle of White Oak Road.
