Battle of Fort Stedman; Appomattox Campaign
The Battle of Fort Stedman took place in Virginia. Confederate troops under Georgian General John B. Gordon assaulted the Union forces at Fort Stedman in an attempt to break the siege of Petersburg. The Confederates overran the first garrison they encountered, and captured several batteries, before the Union regrouped and reinforced. Soon the Confederates were caught in a crossfire as the Union counterattacked. Not only was the Confederate breakthrough halted, but 1900 of the Confederate soldiers were cut off from the rest of the army and captured. This was the opening battle of the Appomattox Campaign.
