Battle of Bentonville Concluded

Confederate General Joseph E. Johnston had not retreated from his position in North Carolina, so the Battle of Bentonville continued - and concluded on this day. As had happened so many times in the Atlanta campaign, Union General William T. Sherman used his numerically superior forces to march around the Confederate army and threaten their retreat route. The Confederates were able to hold off this flanking movement temporarily, but that night Johnston was forced to retreat towards Raleigh. While Sherman pursued the Confederates the following day, the Battle of Bentonville was the last significant engagement between the two sides in North Carolina.
