Battle of Averasborough
The Battle of Averasborough took place, in which native Georgian General William J. Hardee, with only 5400 troops, tried to halt - or at least delay - the Union advance into North Carolina. Hardee faced one wing of the Union army with over 25,000 men. Surprisingly Hardee was able to hold the line for most of the day, before Union General Henry Slocum was able to flank his army and force Hardee to retreat. Another Georgian - General Lafayette McLaws - led one of the infantry divisions of Hardee’s troops.
