Grant Began March to Petersburg

Even after the disaster at the Battle of Cold Harbor, Union General Ulysses S. Grant refused to retreat. On this day he began moving his army from Cold Harbor to the James River. Confederate General Robert E. Lee would move his army as well, staying between Grant’s army and the Confederate capital of Richmond. But this time, Grant was not headed for Richmond; instead he intended to take his army to the important railroad junction of Petersburg, VA, just over twenty miles south of Richmond.
