Monitor-Merrimack Battle

The Battle of Hampton Roads took place - the famous duel of the ironclads, The Monitor and The Merrimack (CSS Virginia). The battle was essentially a stalemate; neither ship won a clear cut victory, although the Virginia did return to dock after the battle and was not used again. Most significantly, this marked the beginning of ironclad ships in naval warfare. Read more about the battle here.
