Cherokee Nation Repealed Ordinance of Secession

The Cherokee Nation reversed course by repealing its ordinance of secession and abolishing slavery; they had signed a treaty with the Confederate States of America on October 7, 1861. Not all Cherokees agreed with this decision, some kept fighting for the Confederacy, including native Georgian Stand Watie, who would be the last Confederate general to surrender in 1865.
