This Day in Georgia Civil War History

February 16, 1863

CSS Chattahoochee Began Service

Not many ships were built in Georgia, but on this day the CSS Chattahoochee, a steam powered gunboat built in Saffold (Early County), began service in the Confederate Navy. It would undergo a series of mechanical problems, before finally being scuttled near Columbus in late 1864.
