Soldier Wrote Home Concerned about Mother’s Health

A Georgia soldier writing home to his mother expressed concern about her health, before assuring her that his was fine.

“…I dont think you will live long without you take better care of yourself and it would most kill me to never see you again. … Ma you all seem to be very uneasy about me for fear I suffer with cold. I dont want you to think so for when we are at camp and not on picket or other duty we fare very well. We have got good tents and plenty straw to lie on and we lie very comfortable. My pillow feels good and soft to my jaws…” Source: Elizabeth Whitley Roberson, In Care of Yellow River: The Complete Civil War Letters of Pvt.
