Break in Augusta Canal

The Richmond Times Dispatch reprinted a report from an Augusta newspaper on a break in the Augusta Canal.

The break in the Augusta Canal. –The Augusta Chronicle, in alluding to the break which occurred last week in the Augusta Canal, at Ray’s Creek Aqueduct, says: The damage is more serious than at first supposed. A visit to the spot showed us that an immense cavity had been formed, as if the bottom of the canal had literally fallen out, while a large portion of the bank has been swept away. We did not notice if the stone masonry of the aqueduct was much injured by the accident. The escape of the water into the channel of Ray a Creek doubtless prevented a serious overflow of the low lands. A strong force was employed there day yesterday, and it will be repaired as early as possible. It will hardly be put to rights in a week.
