Lumpkin, Jenkins Letters Debated Secession

On this New Year’s Day two separate letters appeared in two different Milledgeville newspapers, each presenting one side of the secession argument. Former Georgia governor Wilson Lumpkin, in the Federal Union, argued for immediate secession. Charles J. Jenkins (who would become governor during Reconstruction), in the Southern Recorder, argued for awaiting results of a Southern Convention.
