Georgia is home to a significant number of United States military bases and installations. The Army has Fort Benning and Fort Gordon, the Navy has Kings Bay Submarine Base, and the Air Force has Robins Air Force Base and Moody Air Force Base. There are smaller bases as well, plus others that have existed in the past, but have since been closed. Georgia’s prominence in this regard can be traced back to former U.S. Representative Carl Vinson, who served for 25 consecutive terms (1914-1965), many as chairman of the House Armed Services Committee.
