Description

Named to honor early settler John Wren, Wrens grew around the Augusta Southern railroad. During the early 1900s, residents built churches and a school in the city. Soon after, industry arrived to grow the area.

The first suction gin of Jefferson County opened in Wrens, and a large flour mill and woodwork factory would soon find their homes in the city as well. Industry continued to grow, and as the 1900s drew on, a cottonseed oil mill, a machine shop, an ice factory, a lumber factory and even a Coca-Cola bottling plant opened here.

Today, Wrens boasts the largest gourd farm on this side of the Mississippi and attracts visitors from all over the country. A few notable residents include author Erskine Caldwell, landscape architect Bruce Kelly and NFL center (and former UGA star) for the Tennessee Titans Fernando Velasco.
