Description

Covington, the county seat of Newton County, was originally known as Newtonsborough. Its name was later changed to Covington to honor General Covington who was made famous for his actions at Fort Recovery. The city was incorporated in 1854.

Nicknamed the “City of Beautiful Homes”, Covington offers tours of the historic homes located in the area. This tour includes homes dating back to the pre-Civil War era.

The CBS television series, In the Heat of the Night, starring Carroll O’Conner, was filmed in Covington. Although the show ended in 1994, the town continues to be a favorite for location filming.

According to 2000 Census, the City of Covington had a population of 11,547 persons. Between 1990 and 2000, the city experienced a population increase of 17.1%, compared to the state growth during this period of 26.4%.
