Civil War Soldier Wrote of Needing Pants

Showing how dire the need for clothing was, a Georgia soldier wrote home to his mother from Fredericksburg on this day - not talking about any upcoming fight, but about the need for pants.

“…Mama I am at a loss to know what is best to do about clothes. I have got as much as I need all but pants. I have no pants worth anything and if I don’t get to draw some before long I will be without and the quartermaster says that we will not draw anymore clothing money. What we draw from now on will come out of our wages so I will just say to you if you can when E.M. comes back to send me one pair of pants. …”
