Assassination Attempt Recorded
John Girardeau Legare of Darien, Georgia recorded an assassination attempt against the President:
“…We have just received the shocking news that Major Wm. McKinley, President of the U.S., was shot and is thought mortally wounded by an assassin with the ever ready pistol in Buffalo, N.Y. His assailant is an anarchist named Czolgozs [sic]. It is hoped that he is not fatally injured. Mr. McKinley is one of the most popular men who ever occupied the presidential chair.” [Note: McKinley did die a week later.]
