“Heavy” Death Recorded in Journal

John Girardeau Legare of Darien, Georgia recorded the death and burial of a beloved, but very hefty, woman:

“…Mrs. E.M Blount, the largest woman I ever saw, died at 1.30 a.m. and was buried this evening in St. Andrews Cemetery. I acted as pall bearer. It took 12 of us to handle the coffin. She was so huge that no ready made casket could be found large enough and one had to be made. Then this casket would not go in the hearse so had to be taken in a spring wagon. She weighed 285 or 385 lbs., I have forgotten which. She was a fine woman, much beloved.”
