From Columbus, John Banks wrote in his journal of five of his seven sons who would fight for the Confederacy:
“This morning Willis left for Bragg’s army. Having been exchanged after staying at home since October. George has resigned and is at home, found his health too feeble for the army. Eugene has been at home for some time and now getting up the conscripts for Stewart County by appointment. Watkins and Elbert still at Knoxville.”
