Carl Sanders Died

To view an image of Carl Sanders as governor, see the Georgia Archives.

Former Georgia governor Carl Sanders died in Atlanta. Born in Augusta in 1925, Sanders served in both the Georgia house and senate before being elected governor in 1962. Sanders was the first Georgia governor elected after the demise of the county unit system, making him the first governor elected by popular vote. At the time of his election he was also the nation’s youngest governor. After running for a second term in 1970 (Jimmy Carter won the election), Sanders retired to a very successful career in private law practice and business investments.

To see and hear Carl Sanders, see Oral history interview with Carl Sanders, 1987 April 27 from the University of West Georgia.
