State Department of Archives and History Created
Gov. Hugh Dorsey signed an act creating the State Department of Archives and History . The new agency was given broad authority over the collection, preservation, and retention of state records, papers, documents, artifacts, military rosters books, and other historical or official items. The act set up a State Historical Commission to govern the new department and appoint its director. The legislation provided that the department would be abolished after three years, but this provision was repealed in 1919. In the 1931 reorganization of Georgia state government, the State Archives was transferred to the Secretary of State, where it remains as a division today.
