Jefferson Davis Public Reception in Savannah

Jefferson Davis was in Savannah for a 6-day visit. On this day, he attended a pubic reception at the city hall. A crowd of approximately 3,000 people stood in line to meet and shake hands with the ex-Confederate president. After the reception, he was escorted to Camp Washington to review the Vicksburg Volunteer Southrons from Davis’s home state of Mississippi. The unit was one of 46 militia organizations from around the country participating in a drill competition as part of the Chatham Artillery’s centennial celebration. Because the Vicksburg Southrons were from his home state of Mississippi, Davis agreed to personally meet and inspect the unit. That evening, Davis attended a reception at Savannah’s Oglethorpe Club.
