Last Confederate Cabinet Meeting

Confederate Pres. Jefferson Davis and several members of his cabinet members held their last meeting in Washington, Georgia. They met in the old Georgia State Bank Building, which was located at the site of the present-day Wilkes County Courthouse. Afterwards, Davis and a small party left town headed for south Georgia. His immediate goal was to reunite with his wife and children, as well as escape capture by pursuing Union forces, who believed that Davis had been involved in the plot to assassinate President Abraham Lincoln. Davis also hoped to flee to Texas in order to continue the Civil War until a peace acceptable to the South could be negotiated.
