Sherman Delayed Move into South Carolina

General William T. Sherman had planned to move part of his army into South Carolina, but decided to wait until the following week (which would also be the following year). Also, news reached Savannah about the disastrous Confederate losses at Nashville and Franklin. This meant Sherman did not have to be concerned about any Confederate force left behind him.
