Union Army Prepared for Battle, Awaited Pontoons

The Army of the Potomac was being preparing for battle, by supplying the men with 60 rounds of ammunition apiece, and three days’ supply of cooked rations. But the Confederate defenders had burned the bridges over the Rappahannock River (see photo), and the waterway was too deep (and cold) to wade across this time of year. Any action had to wait on the arrival of pontoon bridges, slowly making their way from Washington, D.C.
