Lookout Mountain; “Battle Above the Clouds”
The Battle of Chattanooga continued on this day, with a Union assault on the Confederate forces on Lookout Mountain. Despite the Confederates holding the high ground, and the mountain’s steep slopes, the Union forces were able to force the Confederates off the high mountain in what came to be called the “Battle Above the Clouds.” Lookout Mountain was the northernmost part of a long plateau stretching well into Georgia, and now the Union held it. All that separated the Union forces from invading Georgia was the main Confederate force on Missionary Ridge.
