Stoneman Raid Began
Union General George Stoneman set out from Kennesaw Mountain on a mission to destroy railroad and free prisoners held in Macon and at Andersonville, in what would become known as the Stoneman Raid. The “raid” soon turned into an expedition rife with looting, plundering and foraging, with some units straggling behind others; this would continue until they reached Macon.
