Army of Northern Virginia Reached Potomac River
By this time, the Army of Northern Virginia’s infantry had reached the Potomac River. But could not cross it - it was swollen with recent rains and the pontoon bridges across it had been destroyed by a cavalry raid. So Robert E. Lee had the men dig an entrenched line, protecting the river crossings, and prepared for an advance from the Army of the Potomac.
