Battle of Adairsville
The Battle of Adairsville took place. Two miles north of Adairsville, a portion of General William T. Sherman’s Union army ran into Confederate infantry. A day of heavy fighting known ensued, which produced some 200 Union casualties. Confederate General Joseph E. Johnston had hoped to find an advantageous location among the hills and valleys of this area of Georgia, where his outnumbered forces could possibly engage Sherman. Finding none suitable, he ordered the Confederates to withdraw south toward Cassville, yet another example of the constant fighting and withdrawing in the Atlanta Campaign - a strategy that was prudent militarily, but frustrating to Confederate officials and citizens in the oncoming path of the Union army.
