Sherman Marched South from Rocky Face Ridge

William T. Sherman pulled most of his Union forces back from the attacks on Mill Creek Gap and Dug Gap at the Battle of Rocky Face Ridge, then hurriedly marched them southward. He hoped to reach Resaca before General Joseph E. Johnston realized what was happening, Sherman knew he could defeat the smaller Confederate force defending Resaca, but more importantly, the bulk of the Union army would then be south of the Confederate forces, which would make Atlanta an easy prize to take - if his move was successful.
