Jefferson Davis Captured Outside Irwinville, Georgia
Union cavalry pursuing former Confederate President Jefferson Davis discovered his camp outside of Irwinville, Georgia. Davis and his party were still asleep and caught by surprise. Davis covered himself with his wife’s overcoat and tried to escape on foot. Because of this, he was unfairly lampooned in the northern press as trying to escape by disguising himself as a woman.
