Sherman/Johnston Signed Initial Armistice Agreement

Union General William T. Sherman and Confederate General Joseph E. Johnston signed an armistice memorandum at Durham Station, North Carolina; the terms of surrender would be finalized by the following week after being reviewed by the U.S. government. Johnston’s command, which included Georgia, was the last major force still in the field for the South. This marked the effective end of fighting in the Civil War, although there would be a few more minor skirmishes. Large scale desertion from the Confederate forces began as soon as word of the armistice agreement was spread - approximately eight thousand soldiers would head for home before the final surrender was signed.
