Union Ships Ran Past Vicksburg
Union Admiral David Porter sent twelve vessels south on the Mississippi River past Vicksburg. At this point the river has several twists and cannot be run rapidly. The boats were hit a number of times by Confederate gunners, but suffered little damage except for one vessel. This ensured that Ulysses S. Grant’s army could be ferried across the river in relative safety, in preparation for the coming battle for Vicksburg - the final Confederate stronghold on the Mississippi River. Many Georgians were in the Confederate force defending Vicksburg.
