Battle of Five Forks; Appomattox Campaign

A major engagement took place in Virginia - the Battle of Five Forks - an important intersection of roads used for communication and supplies. Union forces had gained control over one of the roads at the Battle of White Oak Road the previous day, and on this day were able to overwhelm the Confederate defenders. The Confederates lost almost three thousand men - many of them captured - while the Union lost less than one thousand. The Confederate army was now surrounded on three sides, with its last supply line being threatened.
