Bust of Georgia founder James Oglethorpe sculpted by Felix
Weihs in 1940 was presented by Sir Eric Underwood of London to Georgia
in 1941. Underwood was cousin of Marvin Underwood, a federal judge who
lived in Atlanta. The bust was unveiled in formal ceremonies on the state
capitol grounds and accepted by Gov. E.D. Rivers. Later, the bust was moved
to the interior of the capitol, where it was placed on the landing of the
stairs from the second to third floors in the northern wing of the capitol.
