Ma Rainey Commemorative Stamp This stamp was issued September 17, 1994 with first-day-of-issue ceremonies in Greenville, Mississippi. It is part of a 8-stamp set of stamps honoring great American jazz and blues singers. Gertrude Pridgett Rainey, who as Ma Rainey was known as the "Mother of the Blues," was born April 26, 1886 in Columbus, Georgia. She died December 22, 1939 in Rome, Georgia.
