Hiwassee River
The Hiwassee River originates in Towns County, Georgia, flows northward into North Carolina, then turns westward into Tennessee. In Tennessee, it is called the Hiawassee River. It empties into the Tennessee River, which takes a winding course before emptying into the Ohio River. The Ohio River then empties into the Mississippi River, which flows southward into the Gulf of Mexico. The Hiwassee River is approximately 140 miles long; only a short span of this length is in the state of Georgia.
