Brotherton Cabin
Photo: Sharon Murray This field marks the turning point of the Battle of Chickamauga. Miscommunication by Union officers caused them to move a group of soldiers off the line, leaving a gap. Confederate General James Longstreet, who had just recently arrived at the battle site, saw the opening and led a charge through it, which nearly routed the Union army and turned the tide of the battle in the Confederates' favor. Union General George H. Thomas was able to rally his half of the Union army on Snodgrass Hill, where they withstood several afternoon attacks, before retreating in the night.
