OLD GARRISON TRAIL

This trail is so named because soldiers travelled it from fort Wilkinson to Fort Hawkins at East Macon in 1807. In 1813, when Peter Early was governor, he vetoed a bill arresting the collection of debts. It is said that when a regiment marched threateningly around the Governor's Mansion in protest, he went out directly to the Colonel and ordered him to march the men along this trail to Ft. Hawkins 30 miles away, saying, "If you dare disobey this order, I'll have you shot at the head of this regiment".
