CLEBURNE'S DIV. AT FLINT RIVER BRIDGE

Aug. 31, 1864. Kilpatrick's cav. [US], posted here to guard the rt. Flank of Howard's forces astride Fairburn Rd. (1 mi. N.), rebuilt the burned bridge & 5 regts. (dismounted) with 4 artillery pieces were barricaded on this side of Flint river. At 3:30 P. M., the 4 brigades of Cleburne's div. (under Lowrey), Hardee's A. C. [CS], moving N. W. to attack the right of Logan's 15th A. C. upstream, were assailed by forces at the barricades.
Lowrey's brigades changed front & not only drove Kilpatrick's men across the Flint, but followed them to the other side -- a diversion that disrupted a concerted attack on Logan.
