Former Emanuel County Courthouse

Former Emanuel County Courthouse

Location: Swainsboro

Date Built: 1940

Architectural Style: Stripped Classical

Designer: Dennis & Dennis

Other Information: After the 1919 courthouse burned in 1938, a new courthouse was built on the downtown Swainsboro public square. The exterior of the two-story building was covered with marble. Eventually, the courthouse's limited size forced a number of county departments to move to vacant office buildings facing the courthouse square. In the late 1990s, traffic problems, lack of parking space, and exterior and interior deterioration (see photos) led Emanuel County officials to close the courthouse. In 2000, the old courthouse was torn down (see photo of courthouse square).
