Button Gwinnett

1735-1777

Career: served in Georgia's colonial legislature and became one of the colony's leading voices for independence; president of Georgia's Council of Safety; delegate to the Second Continental Congress and one of Georgia's three signers of the Declaration of Independence. Gwinnett County created and named in his honor in 1818.
