Betsy Ross Stamp
- Betsy Ross Commemorative Stamp
-
-
- This stamp was issued in 1952 to mark the
200th anniversary of the birth of Betsy Ross. It is supposed
to show Ross in her Philadelphia home presenting the first U.S.
flag to George Washington (left), George Ross, and Robert Morris
in June 1776. The stamp's design is an engraving of Charles H.
Weisgerber's 1893 painting, "The Birth of Our Nation's Flag"
(see
image). Ross was a seamstress who had some experience with
flags. Her role, if any, in sewing the first Stars and Stripes
is unclear; and credit for designing the flag probably goes to
Francis Hopkinson.
