Mayor Offers Atlanta's Aid

Immediately upon learning of the President's death, Mayor Hartsfield telephoned to the Little White House at Warm Springs and offered all the facilities of the city of Atlanta to those in the official family. One of the secretaries to the President thanked the Mayor and assured him that they would, if ocasion [sic] arose, make use of the facilities offered.

The Mayor then ordered the flag of City Hall lowered to half-staff.

"The defenders of freedom throughout the world have suffered a great loss," he said. "Our President has laid down his life in the cause of liberty and has joined those brave men and women of our fighting forces who likewise have given their all."
